Winter storm drops several inches of snow across Chicago area

CHICAGO — Following a Winter Storm Warning, which expired at 2 p.m., a Winter Storm Advisory is in effect for Cook County and Northwest Indiana.

The Winter Storm Advisory for Cook County is set to expire at 6 p.m. The advisory for Lake and Porter counties in Indiana is set to expire at 10 p.m. Up to two additional inches of snow is possible for Cook County and one to three inches are possible for Northwest Indiana.

According to WGN’s Weather Office, the highest snowfall total, so far, is in Wilmette with a reported 8 inches. Midway is close behind with a reported total of 7.2 inches, so far.

Heavy lake effect snow band during morning rush, with snow rates of 2″ per hour possible. Highest accumulations 4-8″, with considerably less amount in areas not under lake effect snow band. Winds: NNW 5-10 mph. High Temp: 21.

Lake effect snow slammed parts of the Chicago area and caused a messy, slow and slick morning commute Friday. Most markings on roads were hardly visible due to snow cover.
