They say there's no more loyalty in the NBA these days. Aside from a player's relationship with his team, some former teammates have also seen their partnership get strained. One such example, a deeply sad one at that, is the tandem of Chicago Bulls legends Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen.
Since the release of the Last Dance documentary, Jordan and Pippen have made snide remarks about each other. Many believe that Pippen, who's known to be a sensitive guy, was hurt by some of the comments Jordan made in the 10-part documentary. Recently, the former Bulls forward released a memoir, where he hit back at His Airness.
Bulls fans are still hopeful that the All-Star pair will patch things up in the future. But for their former teammate Charles Oakley, they've already reached a point of no return. In his recent appearance on The Bill Simmons podcast, Oakley said the relationship is done.
“No, I think it’s over. It wasn’t great from the get-go.”
While thinking that the friendship of Jordan and Pippen is already kaput, Oakley's remark that it wasn't great even from the beginning was quite revealing. Jordan and Pippen definitely looked close during their time with the Bulls, as perfectly captured perhaps by the image of MJ clinging to his sidekick during his memorable “Flu Game” in the 1997 NBA Finals.
Oakley, however, was pretty close to Jordan as well, serving as the Bulls icon's unofficial bodyguard during his early years in the league. While he didn't expound on his revelation, he clearly knows something that we don't.
