To the east, some residents of Virginia up into Massachusetts and Maine are expecting at least a foot or more of snow, with winds of 50 mph producing blizzard conditions.

But central Pennsylvania is expected to be a spectator for this nor’easter.

The storm is expected to strengthen off the coast of North Carolina over the next 24 hours and then make its way north, bringing several inches to Washington D.C. and Baltimore and perhaps 6 inches to Philadelphia. Parts of New Jersey up into New York City and Long Island could get more than a foot of snow, amplified by increasing winds that could reach 40 to 50 mph.

A wide swath from Hartford, Connecticut, to Worcester, Massachusetts, and Bangor, Maine, are preparing for a blizzard, with snows of a foot to a foot and a half blown around by high winds, according to AccuWeather.

“This is going to be an intensifying storm that will produce a lot of wind, which raises concerns for blowing and drifting snow, power outages and blizzard conditions in some areas,” AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Jonathan Porter said.

A winter storm watch is already in place from Friday evening to Saturday evening for portions of northeast New Jersey, southern Connecticut and southeast New York.

As for central Pennsylvania, the forecast calls for flurries or light snow forecast to overspread the area Friday morning and continue into the evening. Perhaps an inch or 2 might accumulate by Saturday morning, the National Weather Service (NWS) says. Winds will gust as high as 25 mph throughout Saturday in what will be the coldest day for awhile.

Temperatures will begin to moderate starting Sunday, the NWS says.

Here’s what the forecast looks like for the next five days:
