Suspects charged in shooting that hospitalized 2 St. Louis officers

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Two men are charged in the officer-involved shooting that put two St. Louis Metropolitan Police officers in the hospital on Wednesday. One of those officers is still critical condition.

Police announced charges against August Burns, 23, of Florissant, Missouri and Clyde Thomas, 35, of Farmington, Missouri. A third suspect, Equan Hopson, 23, of St. Louis, was shot and killed by officers.

St. Louis Fraternal Order of Police President Jay Schroeder told 97.1 FM Talk Marc Cox that "things are starting to look up" for the injured officers.

The shooting happened Thursday afternoon when officers in north St. Louis spotted a Toyota 4-Runner believed to have been involved in a recent homicide. The vehicle took off and led police on a chase to West Florissant Avenue and Northwind Estates Drive near Ferguson, Missouri.

At least one suspect fired at officers, striking two officers who were rushed to the hospital. Officers returned fired, striking Hopson, who was also transported to the hospital where he later died.

St. Louis Police Chief John Hayden has asked for prayers for the officer who remains in critical condition as of Thursday afternoon. The officers involved in this incident are 28 years of age with 2.5 years of law enforcement experience, 25 years of age with 3.5 years of law enforcement experience, and 21 years of age with 1.5 years of Law enforcement experience.

Burns was arrested while was wearing an ammunition carrier with shotgun shells and admitted to possessing a shotgun while in the suspect's vehicle, according to police.

Thomas was also in the vehicle and was arrested after attempting to escape on foot, according to police.

Burns is charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm and Resisting Arrest, and being held on a $250,000 cash-only bond. Thomas was charged with Resisting Arrest and is being held on a $50,000 cash-only bond.
