A new NASCAR Cup Series team rumored since 2018 involved with Floyd Mayweather is now likely to attempt the 2022 Daytona 500.

The Money Team Racing have been rumored for many years to be joining the NASCAR Cup Series. These rumors accelerated in late 2019 with the creation of a team website and Twitter account.

Since then, the belief has been that the team is nothing more than an internet theory. Little was heard about the organization in 2020 and 2021, save for the regurgitated rumor from time to time.

But this year, as initially reported by Adam Stern of the Sports Business Journal, The Money Team Racing are looking to enter the upcoming Daytona 500.

The team have reportedly secured Kaz Grala as their driver as well as sponsorship, plus a new Next Gen car chassis from the now-closed StarCom Racing.

Grala tested a Next Gen car for StarCom Racing back in October at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval.

If they do show up for Speedweeks in Daytona, their appearance is sure to draw a lot of eyes to NASCAR. While his level of involvement is unknown, the entrance of legendary boxer Floyd Mayweather alongside recently added celebrity team owners in Pitbull and Michael Jordan will draw welcome attention. It will further NASCAR’s efforts to market to a new audience.

Earlier this month, it seemed unlikely that the 2022 Daytona 500 would feature a full 40-car field and thus result in the first ever “Great American Race” without at least 40 cars, due to supply issues for the Next Gen and limited resources for non-chartered teams.

Now with the expected addition of The Money Team Racing, there is a clear path to 40 cars.

Other open cars joining the 36 chartered entries for this race include the #27 Team Hezeberg Powered by Reaume Brothers Racing Ford for Jacques Villeneuve, the #62 Beard Motorsports Chevrolet for Noah Gragson, and the #66 MBM Motorsports Ford for Timmy Hill.

NY Racing Team is another possible entrant, which would expand the entry list to 41 and thus send one car home after the Duels. Considering how much of an afterthought the team has been for the last few years, the fact that they seem serious about racing in NASCAR again is a welcome sight.

It is a positive sign that NASCAR is on the verge of reaching a full field for this year’s Daytona 500 despite all of the challenges, and if The Money Team Racing end up being the team to fill it, their presence should certainly boost ratings for the event.
