Presenting Park City’s Beijing 2022 Olympians

PARK CITY, Utah — There will be 50 Park City athletes competing in the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. The nonprofit, Youth Sports Alliance (YSA) coined the phrase “Park City Nation” a decade ago, a term used to describe Olympic athletes hailing from Park City. If competing as an independent country in the 2014 Sochi Olympics, Park City Nation would have finished 10th in the overall medal count, tied with Switzerland. In 2018, at PyeongChang, they would have finished 20th, tied with Australia, for Winter Olympic medals.

Athletes who train with YSA, with close connections to Park City, or who make Park City their home are included in the delegation. The Park City Nation roster listed below parenthetically includes athletes who will represent different country’s flags.

10 of the 50 Park City Nation athletes are graduates of the Park City School District, four are recipients of the YSA Dare to Dream Stein Eriksen Endowment Fund Scholarship, and three got their start in YSA’s elementary school program called Get Out and Play.

“We are seeing the legacy of our founders reflected in athletes representing Park City Nation in Beijing,” says YSA Executive Director, Emily Fisher.” Over the past 20 years, YSA utilized various strategies to get children from Summit and Wasatch Counties outdoors and active – running afterschool programs, fundraising to support local winter sport teams, and providing financial assistance to ensure that children can participate in our afterschool programming or train with their winter sports clubs.”

The United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) has named its 222 member roster. The list includes 115 men and 107 women, the largest ever female contingent for Team USA at an Olympic Winter Games.

“This is an exciting 2022 U.S. Olympic Team – a great mix of returning champions building on remarkable legacies and first-time Olympians eager to show what they can do on the biggest stage in sport,” Rick Adams, the committee’s chief of sport performance and the Chef de Mission for the 2022 games, said in a release. “The dedication of these Team USA athletes to train and compete in this unpredictable global environment is exemplary. It’s an honor to support and celebrate Team USA, and we can’t wait for the Games to begin.”

Utah’s higher than average numbers of elite athletes are attributable, in large part, to the past, present, and future commitment to sports by the Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation.

The Beijing 2022 Paralympics roster will be announced at a later date.
