Humane Society of Louisiana rescues dog looking like a ‘walking skeleton, warrant issued for previous owners

KENTWOOD, La (BRPROUD) — Two volunteers with the Humane Society of Louisiana (HSLA), Bridgette and Gloria, responded to an ad on social media about a couple wanting to sell a poodle for $150. When HLSA arrived to the residence they noticed it lacked running water, electricity, and had piles of garbage everywhere. The owners brought the dog out and Bridgette and Gloria say they were devastated at the sight of the dog.

The dog, later named Booboo, was covered in feces and hair matted on his body. The couple surrendered the dog to Bridgette and Gloria, and HLSA paid for all medical expenses to help the dog.

They took him to a local vet clinic, where they determined that Booboo suffered from anemia, hookworm infestation, a mild corneal ulcer, an ear infection, and malnutrition. The clinic treated the ear and eye infections, dewormed him, and prescribed a re-feeding program that would help him put on weight over time.

Kentwood Police officers attempted to serve the dog owners with a citation for cruelty to animals but they vacated the residence. Police entered the information of the outstanding citation into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC), a computerized database that lists bench warrants and other crime-related information.

“We are grateful to Bridgette and Gloria for acting so quickly to get Booboo out of his hell and provide him with immediate medical attention and proper nutrition,” HSLA Director Jeff Dorson said. “Booboo has gained more than 40 pounds since being rescued. We are equally grateful to the Kentwood Police Department for attempting to cite the owners and bring them to justice. They have made it clear that they take animal abuse seriously in their town and will serve the owners if any of their officers stop them for any other probable violation.”

The Humane Society urges concerned citizens to contact law enforcement agencies or their local animal control department if they see or suspect any act of cruelty.

The group is also raising funds for Booboo and the thousands of other abused animals that they treat throughout the year.
