The Cleveland Cavaliers are in the midst of an incredible January run and currently sit in third place in the Eastern Conference. Despite massive injuries, the team hasn’t skipped a beat and continues to shock the league with their play. Looking at one of the major drawbacks suffered this year, a meniscus injury to Collin Sexton early on in the season forced Darius Garland to become the team’s go-to scorer.

Adding Ricky Rubio’s injury now forces the Cavaliers to add another shot creator if the team wants to make a deep playoff run. That question turns into where does that shot creator come from.

Players like Caris LeVert and Eric Gordon have been brought up as rumored potential targets, but do those players move the needle for Cleveland? What if somehow, another shot creator came from within the organization? That question could turn into reality with a new report surrounding Collin Sexton.

Once it was announced that Collin Sexton would need surgery, the thought was that his season was over. This thought was doubled down in a Cavs “Road Back” episode where Sexton responds with “Nah, Nah it’s over,” when asked if he would return to this season.

A report from Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com states that Sexton is “on track” in his rehab and he won’t rule out a playoff return, however. A statement this vague could mean a lot of things. When during the playoffs would Sexton be eyeing? Is it safe for him to return to play in a high-intensity situation? Does his return put the Cavs over the NBA’s best? Is this all just something to hype up the fans?

Regardless of the potential playoff outlook, this Sexton news was encouraging for the Cavs.

Questions like those are ones that will be answered as we get closer to the playoffs. The fact that a Sexton return is even being talked about goes to show how incredible his work ethic is.

Sexton is a restricted free agent this offseason with all signs pointing to an obvious re-signing. Finding guards with Sexton’s shot-creation, downhill attack, and a continued motor is rare and his relationship with the core makes his extension a priority.

The Cavaliers are much more fun when Collin Sexton is playing. Knowing what we know about this team, implementing Sexton back into the fold shouldn’t be difficult, whether it be in the playoffs or next season.

Until his return, the Cavs should continue to play as a unit and earn the respect of all teams in the NBA.

In his case, Sexton should continue to rehab his knee and be a vocal leader for his teammates off the bench, in the mean time, most notably in recent games.
