2022 NAACP Image Awards: 5 Things to Know About This Year’s Announcer MC Lyte

The legendary rapper has over a dozen voice-over credits.

The 53rd Annual NAACP Image Awards is set to take place on February 26, 2022. The ceremony is sure to be an event you won’t want to miss, promising to bring viewers a night filled with some of the biggest and brightest in Hollywood as we honor some of the most outstanding performances of the year throughout several categories, including music, television, podcast, and more.

The celebration of Black excellence will be hosted by longtime host Anthony Anderson with the announcements made by legendary emcee MC Lyte. The Brooklyn native, much like our host, is a record-breaker herself. As we prepare for what’s promised to be another fantastic night honoring outstanding performances in film, television, theatre, music, and literature here are five things you should know about this year’s announcement MC Lyte.

  • She has a couple of firsts

    In 1988, she became hip hop’s first female artist to release a solo album Lyte As A Rock. Her other series of firsts include becoming the first hip-hop artist to perform at Carnegie Hall, the first female emcee to have a gold single, a solo Grammy nomination, and several other milestones.

  • She went from radio to television

    During what was panning out to be a very successful rap career, Lyte leveraged her popularity to appear on shows including  In Living Color, Moesha, NY Undercover, and My Wife and Kids. She later acquired several gigs starring in series as characters other than herself. Features included In the House, Get Real, Half & Half, and The District.

  • Her passion for hip hop was cultivated early on

    The award-winning emcee began writing rhymes and spitting bars at an early age. In 1986, at just 16-years-old, the entertainer recorded her first song, “I Cram to Understand U (Sam),” highlighting the crack epidemic and its impact on relationships. Lyte’s keen sense of storytelling and confidencemade her a force in the male-dominated industry.

  • She has mad love for her city

    The Brooklyn native never shied away from her roots and never missed a moment to highlight her New York neighborhood. Though not often mentioned,  Lyte played a crucial role in establishing the borough as a mecca for hip hop music and the culture.

  • She has over a dozen voice-over credits

    The legendary rapper began doing voice-overs in 1996 on the reality dating seriesThe Boot. She later garnered deals with major brands, including the Starz network, Tide, and AT&T. The emcee will soon have the honor of announcing the 53rd Annual NAACP Image Awards taking place on February 26.
