Wings-Hawks

DETROIT -- Dylan Larkin and Tyler Bertuzzi both scored their 20th goals of the season and the Red Wings' newly minted second line produced a combined five points in comeback fashion, but a 4-0 deficit proved too much to overcome in an eventual 8-5 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks at Little Caesars Arena Wednesday night.
Chicago silenced the crowd early, jumping out to a commanding 4-0 lead in the opening period. The Red Wings, fueled by the second line featuring Pius Suter, Bertuzzi and Robby Fabbri, answered with three goals in the second period to pull within 4-3. The Blackhawks then extended their lead to 6-3 prior to the midway point of the third period before holding off another late rally by Detroit.

Calvin Pickard made his season debut in goal for Detroit, replacing Alex Nedeljkovic after the first period.
Detroit dropped to 18-19-6 on the season, and 13-7-3 at Little Caesars Arena.
Next Up: The Red Wings will travel to Pittsburgh on Friday night for the first half of a back-to-back. Puck drop from PPG Paints Arena is set for 7 p.m.

QUOTABLE

Jeff Blashill on the early 4-0 deficit
"That's the story of the whole game for me. Yeah, we got it to 4-3, but you can't spot teams four, first of all. We made terrible decisions with the puck, and we're not winning that way here. We've talked lots about it; I think we've made some strides in it. Tonight we went backwards for sure in that way. We forced plays we didn't need to force, we didn't execute with the puck and ultimately, we gave them a whole bunch of chances."
On the process of stopping a team's offensive surge
"I thought we had momentum. I thought we were the better team early, and I thought the rest of the momentum, the rest of the first, was all theirs. Honestly, you've got to do what we did in the second. You get pucks behind them, and you play in the O-zone. We gotta figure this out, we gotta create more on the rush for sure. But you're not gonna do it by forcing things. We've been a pretty good O-zone team all year, so let's be an O-zone team. Let's get it in behind them, and make sure we can play in the O-zone. I thought when we did that in the second, you saw it pay dividends. We had tons of shifts where we were in their end, and tons of momentum."
