Work done on I-93 overpass in Somerville after concrete smashes through driver's windshield
More protective shielding has been installed on an Interstate 93 overpass in Somerville by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation after a piece of concrete fell from the overpass and smashed a vehicle's windshield.
Leonard Brown told NewsCenter 5 that he was driving his SUV on Broadway when the incident happened at about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday under the bridge carrying the I-93 south off-ramp over the I-93 connectors.
Despite the concrete coming through the left side of his windshield, Brown said he only suffered a minor injury — a scrape on his hand.
"I'm realizing that it was, you know, a fairly close call," Brown said.
Out of an abundance of caution, MassDOT crews and contractors installed the additional protective shielding on a portion of the underside of the overpass between about 9:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. Wednesday. Those crews also reviewed the areas of exposed concrete in the immediate area while the shielding was being installed.
Similar situation
Brown's close call is eerily reminiscent of a similar scare that happened to a man named Steve Kingsbury in November.
Kingsbury told NewsCenter 5 that he believes debris from bridge construction smashed his windshield while he was driving on I-93 through Milton.
"Some large object struck my windshield, shattered the windshield right in front of me," Kingsbury said.
Kingsbury said MassDOT responded to his report with an email, assuring him project managers would be notified. But following Brown's incident, Kingsbury said his concern is growing.
"I'm looking overhead a little bit more, for it to happen to me and then happen to somebody else," Kingsbury said.
Background on I-93 bridge repairs
MassDOT told NewsCenter 5 that the Somerville I-93 overpass in question was last inspected on May 18, 2020, and was due to be inspected again this May.
According to MassDOT, structures that fall under the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) are inspected a minimum of every two years. Structures that are rated as "structurally deficient," however, are inspected on an annual or more frequent basis as determined by actual conditions.
Transportation officials said the structure is within the limits of a $38.8 million bridge rehabilitation project for the Somerville I-93 viaduct and associated ramps in the area of Interstate 93 between Temple Street and a point south of the intersection of Route 28 and Route 38.
MassDOT said construction bids have been opened and the contract is in the final stages of procurement, and that construction activities are expected to start during the upcoming construction season.
