Looks like the Mortal Kombat film series didn’t suffer a fatality. New Line Cinema has greenlit a sequel to 2021’s Mortal Kombat movie (“Mortal Kombat 2” till further notice), which relaunched the film version of the franchise in a new, very R-rated direction. The studio has tapped Jeremy Slater, who was the head writer on Moon Knight, to write the screenplay for the sequel.
There are few details about how Mortal Kombat 2 will go, though the end of the first movie left the door wide open to them as the battle between Outworld and Earth didn’t come to much of an actual conclusion back then. While no deals have been inked yet, unless the studio is randomly looking to reboot once again, we’ll probably see at the very least Lewis Tan return as Cole Young, a character created specifically for the first film. The first film also teased that Johnny Cage would make an appearance in a second movie if one were to be made.
Mortal Kombat is a hot property for WB, which owns New Line, as one of its more successful gaming franchises that has managed to cross over into other mediums easily, despite the very adult nature of the games. The rebooted movie was fun enough to function even if it wasn’t all that special and turned into a pandemic-time hit for the company, pulling in $83.6 million worldwide against a $55 million budget and becoming an early HBO Max success as the movie was released simultaneously in theaters and on the platform. As WB has abandoned that strategy after 2021, this sequel will most likely hit theaters first.
Since the movie is in such early stages, there is no release window for Mortal Kombat 2.
