Giants co-owner John Mara: 'We're not trading for Deshaun Watson'

Almost immediately after Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio confirmed what had seemed inevitable for nearly a year and said last week that star quarterback Deshaun Watson had "more than likely" played his last game as a member of the organization, fans of teams in need of upgrades at the sport's most important position took to websites such as Twitter to formulate and share potential trade scenarios.

Enter the New York Giants, who have a new general manager in recent Buffalo Bills assistant general manager Joe Schoen and who will soon have a new head coach, an individual who will likely have no direct link with current New York signal-caller Daniel Jones.

The Giants officially introduced Schoen to media members on Wednesday, and team co-owner John Mara was asked during the event if his franchise could pursue Watson before the new NFL year opens in March. Mara quickly shot down such a potential transaction for multiple reasons.

Watson sat out the entire 2021 season following a prior trade request and amid 22 lawsuits and 10 criminal complaints accusing him of acts of sexual assault and misconduct that haven't yet reached any conclusion.

Even if the 26-year-old never spends a second behind bars as a result of those allegations, he could face either a lengthy suspension or a stint on the commissioner's exempt list at some point next fall.

In short, no reasonable person can blame Mara and company for wanting nothing to do with Watson as things stand today.
