ALGER COUNTY, MI – Officials in the Upper Peninsula are warning visitors and residents of hidden open water in Lake Superior.
The Alger County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday that local fishermen have reported that an area known as the “whirlpool” is presenting open water.
The “whirlpool” is in the west channel between Munising Bay and Christmas approximately a quarter mile west of the Grand Island Landing Road.
The area is very difficult to see as a blanket of snow is covering the open water, officials said. Anyone venturing out onto the ice is encouraged to be mindful of the ice conditions as well as areas presenting open water.
The Alger County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Forest service are in the process of posting signage at the Grand Island Ferry warning of the open water.
Alger County is one of the U.P.’s most popular tourism destinations. It includes the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and the Grand Island Ice Caves, among other natural features.
