Deadline expires for candidates to file for 2022 Kentucky primary elections
Tuesday was the last day for Kentucky candidates to file for 2022's primary elections.
The deadline was pushed back for more than two weeks because the General Assembly had not yet approved new elections maps.
While those are now in place, the Kentucky Democratic Party has already sued to get those maps overturned, claiming they are unconstitutional.
The maps are important because in the case of a wave election, Democrats could lose even more seats in the maps they have drawn because they spread their voters so thin, analysts say. And, if political coalitions shift in upcoming years, seats Democrats thought were within reach could suddenly disappear.
Republican leaders insist that the maps are fair.
