The incident happened earlier this month as Mary Veronelli slept inside her home on East 27th Street in Paterson, according to WABC-TV.

Authorities told The Bergen Record an unknown attacker entered the home after breaking a glass window on the back door.

It remains unclear what the motive for the break in was, but WABC reported the attacker immediately entered the Veronelli’s bedroom and began violently beating her.

“I heard footsteps and I saw the silhouette come into my bedroom,” Veronelli told the Record of the attack. “After that, it was all beating. I ended up on the floor in a pool of blood.”

Veronelli suffered tow black eyes, cuts to her head and face – which required 18 staples – and multiple bruises about her body, the Record reported.

WABC reported Veronelli was hospitalized for some time but is afraid to return to her home until the attacker is found and arrested.

Paterson Police and the Passaic Prosecutor’s Office could not be reached for comment Wednesday morning.

However, the Bergen Record reports authorities have said very little publicly about the case.

“This matter is under investigation and being thoroughly investigated by our Paterson detective division,” said Public Safety Director Jerry Speziale told the outlet.

Veronelli told the Record that she thinks she may know who committed the assault, and she provided that information to police.

No arrests have been made as of Wednesday afternoon.
