Flyers defenseman Keith Yandle made NHL history on Tuesday night, simply by being on the ice at UBS Arena when the opening faceoff was dropped to kick off Philadelphia’s game against the Islanders.
By being in the starting lineup on Tuesday night, Yandle clinched playing in his 965th straight game, breaking the NHL’s ironman record of most consecutive games played.
The record was previously held by Doug Jarvis, who played in 964 straight games from 1975 to 1987 with the Canadiens, Capitals and Hartford Whalers.
Yandle hasn’t missed a game since March of 2009, and was honored on Monday in Philadelphia when he tied the record against the Stars. His family was in attendance at UBS Arena to see him break the record on Tuesday night.
Yandle received congratulations from across the NHL on Tuesday night, even from the former record holder Jarvis himself.
The 35-year-old Yandle spent parts of two seasons with the Rangers, logging 103 games and was a +2 over that span, scoring seven goals and recording 51 assists.
