Former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick becomes professor for Harvard Kennedy School

Former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick will begin teaching at the Harvard Kennedy School next week as a professor of the practice of public leadership and as the co-director of the school’s Center for Public Leadership.

Patrick served for two terms from 2007 to 2015. Before he was elected as the first Black governor in Massachusetts, Patrick practiced as an attorney for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, worked as general counsel for Texaco and was an executive vice-president and general counsel at Coca-Cola.

“I am thrilled that Governor Patrick will be joining Harvard Kennedy School,” Dean Douglas Elmendorf said in an announcement. “With his deep and varied experience as a public leader and his important work as a civil rights advocate, Patrick will be a distinguished member of our practitioner faculty. I am delighted he will teach our students who strive to grow as principled and effective public leaders.”

Patrick graduated from Harvard College in 1978, and from Harvard Law School in 1982. He also served as assistant attorney general for civil rights, which Harvard noted is the top civil rights position in the United States Government, from 1994 to 1997 under Bill Clinton.

“It’s an honor to join this distinguished faculty and an exciting opportunity to help lead the Center for Public Leadership,” Patrick said in the announcement. “With the scale and scope of the challenges facing humankind, the world needs conscientious, dedicated leaders at every level in every sector, people willing to spend their ‘political’ capital, not just accumulate it. I am looking forward to working alongside and encouraging leaders like that at the Kennedy School.”
