SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KTXL) — A 16-year-old girl has been hospitalized with serious injuries after an early morning shooting in Antelope.

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office confirms the shooting happened near Watt Avenue and Blackfoot Way around 4:35 a.m. Wednesday.

“Initial 911 call came from the driver of that vehicle, who would be the mom, who was frantic,” explained Sacramento County Sheriff’s Sgt. Rod Grassmann.

The sheriff’s office told FOX40 a woman was behind the wheel of an SUV with two teenagers in the backseat when a shooter pulled up beside them and fired.

“When they got to the area of Watt Avenue, just north of Blackfoot, a shot was fired,” Grassmann said.

The teenage girl was shot in the upper body, officials said.

“That 16-year-old girl was hit by gunfire. My understanding is in her head,” Grassmann said.

A 14-year-old boy in the SUV was not hit by the gunfire but did sustain some injuries from broken glass.

The sheriff’s office initially reported the girl who was shot was 14 years old but later corrected her age. Officials also initially reported the shooting victim was the boy at the scene.

The relationship between the teens and the woman has not been released. 

Watt Avenue was partially closed between Blackfoot Way and Antelope Road.

A lot of people living in the area have been in the neighborhood for decades. Neighbors told FOX40 that having something like this happen so close to home is concerning.

“Never had any problem. The worst thing I think I know a car was stolen and a window was broken,” said neighbor Moti Raghunath.

Moti and Ranjana Raghunath have lived next to the intersection for more than 30 years.

“It is scary, but my prayers with the family,” said Ranjana Raghunath.

The shooting also made other residents question just how safe their neighborhood is.

“Then you start fearing for your own safety, you start wondering. There’s a lot of questions that come with it at the same time,” said Terry, an Antelope resident.

The sheriff’s office said they are still looking for the shooter and do not know what the motive might have been.

They are urging anyone with information to give their office a call.
