Sen. Kirsten Gilliband, D-New York, said today some sort of U.S. military response may be necessary if Russia invades Ukraine.

“We do not want to start a world war and we do not want to get involved in another ground war,” Gillibrand said. “But if (Russia President Vladimir) Putin does start a military incursion then President Biden will have to respond in some kind.”

Gillibrand’s comments came today when asked at a news conference in Syracuse if the U.S. should send troops to eastern Europe in response to the threatened invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

The New York Times reported today Biden is considering sending several thousand U.S. troops, as well as warships and aircraft, to NATO allies in Eastern Europe and the Baltics as fears mount of a Russian invasion of Ukraine. Russia has moved more than 100,000 troops to Ukraine’s border.

Gillibrand said Biden is doing everything he can to avoid military action. “I support President Biden’s approach to Russia’s saber rattling on the border of the Ukraine,” she said.

Gillibrand was in Syracuse to call for more federal funding to help reduce the high rate of maternal mortality among Black women.

She’s asking House and Senate appropriations committee officials to provide $35 million to establish integrated health care services for pregnant women and new mothers and fund a training program to reduce bias in maternal health care.
