Rob Mallard has discussed Daniel Osbourne's return to the dark side in upcoming scenes.

It's been revealed that the widower will confront high school pupil Max Turner (played by Paddy Bever) when he discovers him in his flat; not only is he trespassing but he's also broken something precious belonging to the late Sinead Tinker.

The sequence ends with Max crashing down the stairs.

Referencing his character's dormant temper, Mallard said: "It's like Max drags him down to his level, it's definitely a flashback to the way he used to be.

"It's not the first time something's happened with Daniel at the top of a flight of stairs! It's becoming his thing!"

Further along, he also shared how Daniel is petrified of what he might be capable of: "He's been to some dark places and he doesn't want to go back to them ever again.

"A lot of that was over Sinead, when he pushed Ken [Barlow] it was over Sinead, so the fact that Max comes in and breaks something of Sinead's is one of those triggers that takes him right back there. I think it does worry Daniel how much Max is able to get a rise out of him."

With young Max flat-out at the bottom of the stairs thanks to his hand, how will the school teacher react?

"It's immediate regret and immediate remorse but he's also quite childlike in his response and instead of admitting the truth his instinct is to lie. But he does get himself together and call an ambulance.

"Daniel's terrified, he doesn't know if Max is going to be OK and if he is this will definitely change the power dynamic between them because he doesn't know if Max is going to say he pushed him down the stairs," explained Mallard.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 7.30pm on ITV.
