After less than one full year of business, Duck Donuts in Rehoboth Beach has permanently closed.

Located at 33 Wilmington Ave., in the ground-level shops for The Avenue Inn & Spa, Duck Donuts was opened by Julia and Charles “Buff” Vaughan in December 2020.

At the conclusion of the summer season, the Vaughans left a message on the entrance of the shop saying it was closed for the winter and would reopen in March. However, Duck Donuts announced its permanent closure Jan. 19 in a Facebook post.

“We have made the difficult decision to close permanently. We would like to thank the community for their support and loyalty. We apologize for any inconvenience,” said the post, explaining the business couldn’t find the employees to keep going.

Duck Donuts was founded in 2006 by Russ DiGilio in Duck, N.C. By 2011, Duck Donuts had expanded to four Outer Banks locations. The first franchise opened in Williamsburg, Va., in 2013. There are now nearly 100 locations, one international, and roughly 150 more under contract to open. This was the second Duck Donuts in Delaware and the first in the beach area.
