The Sinner season four spoilers ahead.

Bill Pullman's tortured Detective Harry Ambrose in The Sinner has sadly solved his last case, ladies and gentlemen.

The crime drama has kept us on our toes for four seasons and met its suitably dark conclusion with its final outing, which is now available on Netflix.

Originally airing on USA Network in the States back in December 2021, it was revealed a month beforehand that this would be the show's last.

On November 17, series creator Derek Simonds confirmed the worst for fans, stating that this was the intended plan for the troubled cop for a while.

In a statement, he said (via TVLine): "It's been a huge pleasure and a privilege to be able to tell the kind of stories we have on The Sinner these past four seasons.

"[Universal Content Productions] and USA have been ideal partners and continually supportive of our creative goals, and I'm so pleased to complete Harry Ambrose's dramatic series-long arc as we intended in this final season.

"A huge thank you to my partner-in-crime, Bill Pullman, and to the talented actors, writers, directors, and crew who gave their all to help realize this show. It's been an incredible journey."

Is there any chance of The Sinner season 5?

Unfortunately, it looks like this is it for Ambrose and his ability to land himself in some of the trickiest whodunnits in recent TV history.

The Sinner took its time to pick up steam over in here in the UK, largely due to the Jessica Biel-starring first season originally airing on BBC Four following its success across the Atlantic.

But when it hit Netflix with the Carrie Coon-led season two, the show gained a whole new lease of life, and a larger fanbase as a result.

The renewed interest was enough for seasons three and four to be given the green light. In season three, American Horror Story's Matt Bomer and The Mindy Project's Chris Messina led the cast, but it wasn't as critically received as its predecessors.

Following season four's conclusion, Derek Simonds once again reiterated that he had achieved what he wanted with Ambrose's character, who was so struck down by grief and depression that it often clouded his judgment or, as in the case of season four's Percy Muldoon, caused him to obsess over finding actual answers.

But there is still some slight hope as well, and he told TVLine: "I could definitely see revisiting the show. I think that would be a fun experience, after some time, to revisit the character.

"I will say this: Right now, I don't know what else to say with Ambrose," the creator clarified. "I feel like if there were more seasons consecutively following this one, we'd be in danger of repeating ourselves with diminishing returns.

"But I love the idea of working with Bill again, and revisiting this world that I've lived in for the past five years and have really cherished, so I'm always open to that."

So while the door looks shut for now, who knows what may happen in the future.

The Sinner: Any spin-offs in the works?

Unfortunately, we haven't heard anything about possible spin-offs, and it seems highly unlikely that there will be any.

The Sinner essentially functioned as an anthology, with each season focusing on one specific case as it unwound.

The only connecting factor was Detective Harry Ambrose, who was the leading cop on the hunt for the truth in each one.

Without him, and there being no other connecting characters between each season, it would be virtually impossible for the show to argue a spin-off is legit with emotional ties to the initial series.

Sorry folks, it looks like we're going to have to let Ambrose retire in peace.

The Sinner is available now on Netflix.
