Anush Hovhannisyan, Anne Sophie Duprels & Louise Alder Lead Opera Holland Park’s 2022 Season

Opera Holland Park in the U.K. has announced its casting and creative team for the 2022 season.

The season will open with a new production of “Eugene Onegin” which is set to be conducted by Lada Valešová and directed by Julia Burbach. The cast will include Anush Hovhannisyan, Samuel Dale Johnson, Thomas Atkins, Emma Stannard, Amanda Roocroft, Kathleen Wilkinson, Matthew Stiff, and John Wood.

Performance Dates: May 31-June 25, 2022

Bizet’s “Carmen” will be conducted by Lee Reynolds and directed by Cecilia Stinton. Kezia Bienek takes on the title role alongside Oliver Johnston, Thomas Mole, and Alison Langer.

Mark Adamo’s 1998 opera, “Little Women,” makes its U.K. premiere with Sian Edwards conducting Ella Marchment’s production. Charlotte Badham leads teh cast with Kitty Whately, Harriet Eyley, Elizabeth Karani, Frederick Jones, Harry Thatcher, Lucy Schaufer, Benson Wilson, Victoria Simmonds, and James Cleverton.

Performance Dates: July 22-August 5, 2022

The company will showcase a double bill of Delius’s verismo opera “Margot la Rouge” with Puccini’s early work “Le villi.” Francesco Cilluffo conducts the production by Martin Lloyd-Evans. The Delius opera is set to star Anne Sophie Duprels, Samuel Sakker, Paul Carey Jones, Sarah Minns, Laura Lolita Perešivana, Laura Woods, George von Bergen, and Jack Holton. Meanwhile, Puccini’s opera will star Anne Sophie Duprels, Peter Auty, and Stephen Gadd.

Performance Dates: July 21-August 6, 2022

The season will conclude with Gilbert and Sullivan’s “H.M.S. Pinafore” conducted by David Eaton and directed by John Savournin. Richard Burkhard stars alongside John Savournin, Peter Kirk, Frederick Long, Themba Mvula, Peter Lidbetter, Llio Evans, Sophie Dicks, and Lucy Schaufer.

Other Events 

The Opera in Song, a recital series will continue in 2022 and will feature “Carmen in Song” with Adèle Charvet, Julien Van Mellaerts, and Simon Lepper, Unsung Heroines withLouise Alder, and Gary Matthewman, and America in Song with Francesca Chiejina, Kitty Whately, Frederick Jones, Alex Otterburn, and Dylan Perez.

The series will also include “Schubertiade” with Roderick Williams and Ella O’Neill performing Winterreise in Jeremy Sams’s English translation, Winter Journey and Julien Van Mellaerts and James Baillieu performing “Die schöne Müllerin.” Finally, Ema Nikolovska and Kunal Lahiry will present Schwanengesang with the world premiere of The Lake, composed by Errollyn Wallen.

Performance Dates: June 28-July 3, 2022

Kurt Weill’s “The Seven Deadly Sins” and Béla Bartók’s “Bluebeard’s Castle” will be presented with Mezzo-soprano Julia Riley leading Kurt Weill’s ballet chanté as Anna and David Stout and Gweneth-Ann Rand in Bartos work. Jessica Cottis conducts the UK premiere of Eberhard Kloke’s 25-player arrangement of the Bartók.

Handel’s “Serse” will be presented in a concert performance.

Bertie Baigent conducts Prokofiev’s “Pete and the Wolf” in Guy Withers’s production.
