Forward Derrick Jones Jr. suffered a right index finger fracture while working out at the team’s facility, the Bulls announced. He’s expected to be sidelined for the next six to eight weeks, though the possibility exists he could return sooner with a protective splint, the team said. Jones had been sidelined since Jan. 12 due to a bone bruise in his knee but was expected to return in the next couple of weeks.

Now, he’ll be out for an extended period. It’s also possible that Jones has played his last game in a Bulls uniform, as his expiring $9.7-million contract is the size that would fit snugly into a trade that could help Chicago obtain a roster upgrade. The trade deadline is Feb. 10.

Jones is averaging 6.3 points and 3.4 rebounds in 17.2 minutes across 31 games, including eight starts. He’s shooting 58.2%.

Jones' setback is just the latest in a string of injuries for the Bulls, who just got guard Zach LaVine and forward Javonte Green back Monday. Guard Lonzo Ball is in line to undergo knee surgery later this week and then will be out six to eight weeks. Guard Alex Caruso underwent wrist surgery Monday and will be out at least six to eight weeks. And second-year forward Patrick Williams has been out since late October with a serious wrist injury. He could return late in the regular season, though uncertainty remains regarding his health.
