CNN’s Jim Acosta says he has ‘marks’ on his back but no apology from Trump

CNN’s Jim Acosta says he never got an apology from former President Donald Trump.

The White House correspondent-turned-host talked about the “marks on [his] back” from covering the Trump administration during a handover to Don Lemon on Monday night while they talked about Fox News’s Peter Doocy getting a call from President Joe Biden after the commander in chief called him a “stupid son of a bitch” for asking a question about inflation.

“I mean, today we had the president of the United States refer to a reporter as an SOB. You know, Don, you and I got called a lot worse back in the day. We never got an apology. I don’t remember that from the commander in chief. So maybe things are a little bit better to some extent,” Acosta said.

Trump often lashed out at Acosta during press conferences and referred to him or his network as “fake news” and the “enemy of the people.” His White House press pass was suspended in 2018 until CNN sued and a federal judge ordered it to be restored. In a 2019 article for CNN, Acosta referred to Trump’s insults as a “full-blown assault” on the press and argued that it made some journalists feel “endangered.”

Acosta also suggested that the state of U.S. democracy is worse now than it was during the Trump administration. He argued that Trump’s response to the 2020 election could inspire other politicians to undermine faith in future election results.

“I think we are in worse shape than we were to some extent during most of the Trump administration,” he said. “If we have a situation come November where you have elections all over the country thrown into chaos because everyone wants to act like Donald Trump and not accept the fact that they lost the election, I think, yes, we could have a serious breakdown in our democracy.”

Acosta is currently hosting a nightly special, Democracy in Peril, this week on CNN. The time slot was previously filled by Chris Cuomo, who was fired for helping his brother, former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, maneuver a sexual harassment scandal.
