Bikes On Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del.- The nation's summer capital usually lives up to its name year in and year out and people have many ways to get around the city.

One of them is bicycles which currently are not permitted on the boardwalk between May 15 & September 15 except between daybreak and 10 a.m.

Committee member Patrisha Davis proposed moving that up an hour which would cut bikes off at 9 a.m.

Business owners say that could hurt them. But owner of Seagreen Bicycle & committee member Frank Cole says safety comes first and and finding a consistent timeframe, rather than losing an hour, could be a compromise.

"I think the ordinance should be modified so that all bikes must be off the boardwalk as of May 1st instead of May 15th and that ordinance would be in effect for four months until November 1st," Cole said.

Davis voiced concerns about the use of bikes on the boardwalk.

"We need to think about either modifying the hours for bikes or banning, god forbid, banning the bikes on the boardwalk," Davis said. "It's just I've had several run-ins and near accidents with my own family walking on the boardwalk."

Committee member Brian Hancock thinks that electric bikes which are relatively new to the area need to be regulated.

"These electrical bikes are plentiful in the summer," Hancock said. "They're basically mopeds, small motorbikes. And they travel fast and they're big and they're very if you got hit by one of these, it would be like being hit by a vehicle."

Two wheels or no wheels on the boards during the summer season could be a decision down the line the city will have to consider.

Sussex County's outfall proposal was discussed briefly. On Thursday, Mayor Stan Mills said that the two parties could not reach an agreement allowing the county to use some of the city's outfall capacity. They will no longer be pursuing the deal.
