Young Kevin McGuff was there in 1982 at old Riverfront Stadium for the Freezer Bowl, still the coldest game in NFL history as the Bengals beat the Chargers to advance to the Super Bowl."We didn't have a lot of luxuries when I was a kid but my Dad bought Bengals season tickets in 1969 when Riverfront Stadium opened," McGuff told ABC-6 Tuesday. McGuff huddled with one of his sisters and his parents for the AFC Championship game Jan. 10, 1982 with the temperature at minus 9 degrees with sustained 27 mph winds to equate to minus 59 degrees. The veteran coach says no one asked to go home. What did he wear that day ? "I don't remember but I think it was everything I had," added McGuff. The Bengals take their championship hopes to Kansas City Sunday with a chance for the franchise to reach its third Super Bowl with a win over the favored Chiefs. "I'm hoping for the 49'ers (to win NFC title) and maybe we can get them this time. The third time would be the charm, "added McGuff. Both of the Bengals Super Bowl losses have come at the hands of the San Francisco 49'ers.
