MINNEAPOLIS (Audacy) — Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco said federal prosecutors are reviewing fake Electoral College certificates from Pennsylvania and six other states declaring former President Donald Trump the winner of states that President Joe Biden won, CNN reported.

Monaco shared the information with CNN on Tuesday, but did not go into detail due to the ongoing investigation.

"We've received those referrals. Our prosecutors are looking at those, and I can't say anything more on ongoing investigations," Monaco said to CNN.

In December 2020, the fake certificates were sent to the National Archives by Trump's allies.

Monaco said as the investigation unfolds, efforts are also being made to address threats and harassment that election officials are dealing with.

"I'm concerned about the really disturbing nature of the threats that we've seen. They've been disturbingly aggressive, and violent and personal," Monaco said.

As for where the investigation into the certificates stands and where it'll lead, Monaco said the Justice Department was "going to follow the facts and the law, wherever they lead, to address conduct of any kind and at any level that is part of an assault on our democracy."

The fake certificates contain the signatures of Trump supporters who claimed to be the rightful electors in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

Several lawmakers and government officials have requested in the last year that the Justice Department investigate the nature of the falsified documents.

Some were actually sent by top officials representing the Republican Party in each state, according to American Oversight. This watchdog group made them public after obtaining them.

The House select committee also recently shared that a draft executive order which would have had the military seize voting machines is being examined.

As for the fake Electoral College certificates, Monaco shared that prosecutors are looking into the attempt to reverse the results of the 2020 election but did not go into further details with CNN.
