Sean Payton’s time in New Orleans is reportedly coming to an end.

According to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport, the Saints head coach has informed the organization that he is stepping away from his post. This news comes after a 15-year run in New Orleans, which included a Super Bowl XLIV victory over the Indianapolis Colts.

Payton has been the head coach of the Saints since 2006. New Orleans is coming off a 9-8 year in 2021, missing the playoffs for the first time since the 2016 season.

During his 15-year run in New Orleans, Payton compiled a 152-89 record with playoff appearances in 9 seasons. The Saints also hit a double-digit win total 9 times.

Payton spent 10 seasons as an assistant coach in the NFL before landing the gig as the head coach in New Orleans. He had stops with the Philadelphia Eagles (1997-98) and New York Giants (1999-2002) as a quarterbacks coach. He would later take the title of offensive coordinator for the Giants in 2000.

Payton’s last stop as an assistant was with the Dallas Cowboys, where he was the assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach from 2003-05.

Before his career in the NFL, Payton had stops at the college level at San Diego State, Indiana State, Miami (OH) and Illinois.

Payton’s decision to step away from the game comes one season after legendary quarterback Drew Brees announced his retirement from the NFL. The 2021 season was the first year Payton did not coach Brees.
