It is not a secret that the Seattle Mariners covet several Oakland A’s players. General manager Jerry Dipoto has said as much, indicating that the A’s have several players he would like to have on their roster. This has led to a great deal of speculation about a deal between the two clubs, particularly involving third baseman Matt Chapman.

While the Mariners had been upfront about their interests, it was unknown as to what the A’s would want in return. That may have changed as the A’s are reportedly expected to target infield prospect Noelvi Marte in any possible trade involving Chapman heading to Seattle.

Oakland A’s interest in Noelvi Marte makes sense

The A’s reported interest in Marte makes a great deal of sense. He is regarded as one of the top prospects in the Mariners’ system, a player whose blend of speed and power makes him an intriguing player. He showed his potential across two levels last year, producing a .273/.366/.460 batting line in his 511 plate appearances in A-ball. Marte also hit 17 homers and 28 doubles while stealing 24 bases.

There are some concerns with Marte however. He has made 60 errors in 162 games at short, the only position he has played as a professional. Marte does have the arm to handle a switch to third if needed, and his offensive production should allow such a change as well. Given his defensive miscues, that move seems inevitable.

But that does not mean that the Mariners would be willing to part with the young shortstop. Dipoto has said that he does not foresee a scenario where he would be willing to part with any of the team’s top prospects, which would include Marte.

At least, that is the plan for now. Desperate times can call for desperate measures, which would include changing that strategy. Chapman could be the piece the Mariners need, both as a power threat in the lineup and an excellent defensive option at the hot corner. A 19 year old prospect, no matter how highly regarded, could be the beginning of making that trade happen.

The Oakland A’s are reportedly interested in Noelvi Marte in any possible Matt Chapman talks. That interest makes a great deal of sense.
