Tuesday high school sports report: Wedemeyer all-star football game returns after a one-year COVID pause

Two months before the pandemic shut down in 2020, the 46th Charlie Wedemeyer Santa Clara County all-star high school football game unfolded in a new spot on the calendar.

The annual summer showcase moved to winter.

The South won 33-14 in January 2020 to run its record to 24-18-4 in the game named after a former Los Gatos head coach who died in 2010 after a long battle with ALS.

COVID prevented a Wedemeyer game from being held in 2021, but there will be one this year.

The 47th game is scheduled for Feb. 5 at Los Gatos High.

The kickoff is set for 6 p.m.

The seniors-only matchup will include some of the players recognized this month on the all-Bay Area News Group team, including co-offensive player of the year Luther K. Glenn, a running back from Wilcox, and three first-team selections from St. Francis, defensive back Nicolas Andrighetto, linebacker Camilo Arquette and offensive lineman Uluakinofo Taliauli.

Andrighetto caught the winning touchdown pass against De La Salle. Glenn helped lead Wilcox to a state title game.

They are on the North roster.

The South roster includes Valley Christian lineman Marcus Failla and Leland’s Mark Eby, who lined up at running back, wide receiver and safety for the Chargers. Both players received second-team all-BANG honors.

Los Gatos coach Mark Krail, who has worked behind the scenes to make the game happen, said the biggest challenges were settling on a site for the game and pregame banquet.

Normally held at a restaurant, the banquet will be a BBQ outdoors because of COVID restrictions.

“We just told everybody we’re doing the best we can given the circumstances of where we are,” Krail said last week. “We’re going to host the game here. We’re excited. We met with both teams, players and parents. The kids seem excited, which is great.”

Pioneer’s Eric Perry will coach the South. Mountain View’s Shelley Smith, who has announced his retirement, will coach the North.

“It’s really cool for Shelley,” Krail said. “I told the guys this is going to be the last high school game that he coaches, or at least that’s the thought. So that’ll be kind of fun for him, to get that last hurrah, and Eric’s a veteran of the game. He played in the game and has coached it before.”

“Hopefully we fill both sides and maybe it’s a little bit of standing room,” Krail said. “That’s our hope.”

Boys basketball

No. 1 Campolindo 75, College Park 23

Campolindo tuned up for big league games this week against Northgate and Miramonte, rolling to a victory at home Monday over College Park to extend its winning streak to 10 games.

On a night when the entire roster got minutes and scored, Shane O’Reilly had 13 points and Aidan Mahaney added 11 points to lead the way.

Campo, which led 50-14 at halftime, improved to 16-1 overall and 4-0 in the Diablo Athletic League’s Foothill Division.

College Park is 6-12, 1-4.

Campo plays host to eighth-ranked Northgate on Wednesday and third-ranked Miramonte on Friday.

No. 10 Archbishop Riordan 76, No. 7 Serra 68, OT

Serra led by eight points through three quarters on its home court Monday night against Archbishop Riordan. The Padres were eight minutes from a second consecutive statement victory after winning at home Saturday against Archbishop Mitty.

But Riordan rallied behind another spectacular performance from junior King-Njhsanni Wilhite to prevail in overtime.

Wilhite finished with 34 points as the Crusaders improved to 10-5 overall and 4-1 in the West Catholic Athletic League.

Serra is 11-5, 4-3.

Marcellus Edwards (13 points) and Zachary Jones (12 points) also scored in double figures for Riordan.

Garret Keyhani had a dominant game for Serra, finishing with 28 points and 12 rebounds.

The teams meet again Wednesday at Riordan.

No. 2 Archbishop Mitty 74, Valley Christian 50

Mitty, playing on the road, responded to its nine-point loss at Serra in a big way, cruising past a Valley Christian team that has lost four consecutive games since it shocked Serra by a point on Jan. 15.

Mitty is 12-4, 5-1.

Valley dropped to 7-9, 2-4.

Tyler Jones scored 16 points and Derek Sangster added 14 points to lead the Monarchs.

Valley got 22 points and 12 rebounds from Jacob Bannarbie.

Elsewhere

Aidan Braccia scored 29 points on 11-of-14 shooting to lead fifth-ranked Sacred Heart Prep to an 87-38 victory at home in Atherton over Harker. SHP, coming off a nine-point loss Saturday to Lincoln of Stockton, ran its record to 12-3 overall and 5-0 in the West Bay Athletic League. Harker is 8-8, 2-4. … No. 8 Northgate set up its showdown Wednesday at Campolindo, beating Las Lomas 58-33 to improve to 16-2 overall and 5-0 in the DAL Foothill. Las Lomas is 7-10, 0-4. … In a wild, back-and-forth game, Bishop O’Dowd edged host Piedmont 67-66 on a late basket by Cameron Brown to remain undefeated in the West Alameda County Conference’s Foothill League. O’Dowd improved to 7-5, 4-0. Piedmont is 8-8, 3-1. O’Dowd led 22-7 after the first quarter. Piedmont roared back to even the score 35-35 at halftime. The teams were still tied after three quarters, 48-48.

Girls basketball

No. 15 Los Gatos 57, Homestead 47

Freshman Nicole Steiner scored 17 points and sophomore Belle Bramer added 14 points to propel host Los Gatos past Homestead in Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division action.

Los Gatos led 13-8 after the first quarter, 29-22 at halftime and 45-34 after three quarters.

The Wildcats improved to 15-1, 4-0. Homestead is 10-5, 2-2.

Elsewhere

No. 13 San Leandro cruised past Antioch 64-32 to stretch its winning streak to four games. The Pirates are 12-3. Antioch fell to 7-6. … Burlingame stayed undefeated in the Peninsula Athletic League’s South Division, turning back host Menlo-Atherton 44-33. The Panthers improved to 12-3, 3-0. M-A is 7-8, 0-4.
