First Look at Guillermo del Toro's 'Pinocchio' Coming to Netflix

Netflix has unveiled the first teaser trailer for Guillermo del Toro's new animated musical version of Pinocchio.

The short glimpse of the movie features a classic character, and a familiar voice, and it also gives fans an idea of the style of the animation that will be used throughout. The trailer ends with the release date, implying we could be set to enjoy the upcoming Netflix movie by this Christmas.

Take a look at the first trailer for Netflix' Pinocchio above, and here's everything you need to know about the reimagining by del Toro.

What Do We See in the Pinocchio trailer?

Only one character is seen in the new Pinocchio trailer, and he introduces himself as Sebastian J. Cricket—and we can assume that the J will stand for Jiminy.

Voiced by Ewan McGregor, the blue cricket finishes writing a story and then walks toward the camera. Sebastian promises to tell the actual story we think we know, before revealing that he lived in the actual heart of the wooden boy. Now this could be a metaphor, but with the dark origins of the classic tale that Pinocchio is based on, not the Disney version, this could be meant literally.

The camera zooms away to reveal the movie's logo, which reads "Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio" in wooden letters. The Netflix logo then appears onscreen, starting out in wooden colors before turning back to its traditional red.

The trailer ends by revealing the movie will come out in December 2022.

Who Stars in Pinocchio on Netflix?

The cast of Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio has been known since August 2020, when Netflix revealed who'd be voicing the roles.

Newcomer Gregory Mann will voice the titular Pinocchio, while McGregor voices Cricket. David Bradley, known for playing Filch in Harry Potter, will voice Geppetto.

Also in the cast are Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things), Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine), John Turturro (Severance), Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Tim Blake Nelson (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs), Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained) and Burn Gorman (Enola Holmes).

Del Toro is sharing directing duties with Mark Gustafson, he wrote the story with Matthew Robbins, and that pair developed the screenplay with Patrick McHale (Adventure Time).

The movie's score is composed by Alexandre Desplat, whom del Toro previously worked with on the Oscar-winning The Shape of Water.

Pinocchio in Theaters

There is another version of Pinocchio due out in 2022, coming from Disney. Tom Hanks, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth and Cynthia Erivo are due to star in that part-live action version of Pinocchio.

The Netflix version of Pinocchio is described in the production notes as a "lifelong passion project" for del Toro, and it will debut on Netflix and in movie theaters upon release.

Pinocchio is set to be released in December 2022, with a specific release date yet to be announced.
