Even Carrie Bradshaw Is Envious Of Her Cool-Girl Neighbour’s Hair

We’ve all known women who fit the “girl next door” trope. They always look good without much in the way of discernible effort, and are invariably natural and charming, in both looks and manner. An excellent example of the (literal) girl next door is Lisette, Carrie Bradshaw’s new downstairs neighbour in And Just Like That, whose aura of cool emanated from screens when she popped up in episode eight. 

While Carrie was preoccupied by this human reminder (played by Katerina Tannebaum) that she is “no longer cool”, the rest of us were busy admiring Lisette’s shag haircut, a style that’s been trending for a while. “The shag haircut is super cool right now – it’s a great look and has a relaxed bohemian vibe to it,” says Jake Wanstall, hairstylist at Larry King salon. “It creates an amazing silhouette around the face and is suitable for lots of different face shapes and hair types.”

The shag, which is a brilliant cut for curly hair types in particular, has its roots in the ’70s, when icons like Mick Jagger and Stevie Nicks wore the look with aplomb. Modern day devotees include Mica Argañaraz, Billie Eilish and Freja Beha Erichsen. It’s relaxed but rock ‘n’ roll, and has an effortless feel about it. “It’s a great cut if you want to bring out your texture, whatever your hair type,” adds Wanstall. “When a shag is cut well, it falls into place and you don’t have to style it much at all.”

A good shag hairstyle should be cut softly, so that there are no strong, regimented lines to its shape. Like Lisette’s, each layer should be allowed to do its thing, while contributing to an overall silhouette. “Rather than making curly hair look big, it offers a more edgy feel,” he says.

How to style it like Lisette? Those with curly hair should look to curl creams, such as Virtue’s Curl Leave-In Butter, to help define each coil and add movement. “Apply it to hair when it is wet and avoid pulling the product through – just scrunch it so you don’t disturb the curls,” Wanstall recommends. “Then, if it’s summer, you can wait for hair to air dry, or alternatively use the Dyson Supersonic with the diffuser attachment to dry it. Let the diffuser do the work and don’t run your hands through your hair or touch it too much.”

As for those with straight hair, the key is to encourage texture and grit, so try a product like Larry King’s Texture Clay, and follow with a hair cream to define your ends. And there you have it: a cut which feels as full of life as Lisette is.
