CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - UNI women's tennis opens the 2022 season against Creighton and University of Nebraska Omaha.

The first match is set for 7 p.m. Jan. 28 against Creighton. UNI leads the series with Creighton, 9-3 and has kept a perfect 6-0 record playing at home. Creighton won 7-0 in the teams' last meeting in the 2017-18 season.

MORE ON UNO

The second match also will be played in Omaha, Nebraska, this time against UNO. The meet is set for 1:30 p.m. Jan. 29. The last matchup was in favor of the Mavericks, 4-3, last season (2020-2021).

UNI is led by Darta Dalecka, a freshman from Latvia. Her singles record in the fall season was 6-5 and doubles record was 0-8, playing with multiple different partners. Dalecka got fifth place in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament playing flight No. 1 in singles. She also played the main draw in the ITAs among top teams. Dalecka staged a huge comeback to win the first round but fell in the second round.

Last season, injuries plagued UNI's top senior, Harri Proudfoot. UNI posted a 2-14 record, with a 1-5 home record. UNI lost four seniors to graduation. UNI welcomes three newcomers who all bring international experience.

This year the Panthers added three players to the roster, two freshmen (Dalecka and Lorena Cardoso) and one transfer sophomore. Cardoso is from Brazil and currently plays at No. 2 on the team. She won the Creighton Invite playing the D flight. Adrijana Brkic, from Serbia, currently plays in the fourth position. Brikic played her freshman year with Sam Houston State, which won the Southland Conference.

Head coach Chris Sagers is in his seventh year with UNI and received a contract extension that will carry him through the 2023 season. Lane Luhring returns as the volunteer assistant coach.

The Panthers were picked to finish seventh in the preseason Missouri Valley Conference tennis poll. Illinois State was the conference favorite for the top spot.

UNI tennis plays its early season home events at the Black Hawk Tennis Club, an indoor facility located in Waterloo, Iowa. Outdoor home meets are played at the UNI Tennis Facility on campus.
