The Pittsburgh Steelers are going to be evaluating and looking for a new starting quarterback for the first time in nearly two decades this offseason. Ben Roethlisberger was selected in the first round of the 2004 NFL Draft and the organization hasn’t had to worry about the position since.
But, with his likely retirement coming sometime this offseason, the Steelers will be in the market for a new signal-caller. It is unlikely that their starting quarterback for the 2022 season and beyond is currently on the roster unless Mason Rudolph or Dwayne Haskins surprise some people during offseason workouts.
More than likely, Pittsburgh will be going outside the organization to address the need. They could use their first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft on their quarterback of the future. Depending on how things shake out, they could be in a position to select one.
But, they could also look for a veteran option before the draft. There are a few players that could be available via trade that would interest the Steelers. Could Carson Wentz of the Indianapolis Colts be one option?
Over at SpinZone, which is part of the FanSided network, a piece was put together about 10 crazy quarterback trades that could happen this offseason. Went to Pittsburgh was one of the aforementioned deals.
Wentz showed that he can be a serviceable signal-caller for the Colts in 2021, but he came up woefully short when he was needed most. The team’s loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 18 will stick out for a long time.
Wentz picked an awful time to have his worst performance of the season. He fell apart in a win and you’re in game, costing the Colts a spot in the postseason. He was not solely responsible for the team not advancing, but his performance certainly didn’t help the cause.
Pittsburgh would likely aim higher than Wentz, should he even be made available by Indianapolis. It is debatable about how much of an upgrade he would be over Roethlisberger as he didn’t exactly light it up this season, especially when the team needed him most.
Fixing the offensive line is also imperative for Pittsburgh, even more so if they target someone such as Wentz. Protecting him is of the utmost importance as his performance plummets when he is facing pressure.
While the Steelers have some great pieces in place offensively with Najee Harris, Diontae Johnson, Chase Claypool and Pat Freiermuth, the offensive line needs a revamping. Putting Wentz behind that line would spell trouble, so Pittsburgh is likely better off looking elsewhere for quarterback help.
