Warning: The following contains spoilers about a new twist in Episode 3 of Hulu‘s How I Met Your Father.
Tuesday’s How I Met Your Father introduces a fifth potential baby daddy: Jefferson Elementary vice principal Drew (Drake & Josh‘s Josh Peck), who strikes up a connection with Sophie upon their second time meeting. The first time, as we’d soon discover, was at Sid and Hannah’s engagement party, when Sophie tapped Drew on the shoulder and asked if he had a phone charger handy.
“In our pilot, [Sophie] makes clear that she met the father that night, which leaves a little bit of wiggle room as to who our father is,” series co-creator Elizabeth Berger previously told TVLine. “We’re going to have our core guys [Jesse, Sid, Charlie and Ian] which we hope and imagine people will be very invested in, but there will also be the larger world out there that we can draw from in terms of what happened all throughout that night.”
Episode 3 also delves further into Sophie’s backstory. After failing to correct Jesse in the pilot when he suggested that her parents must have been college sweethearts — in reality, Sophie’s mom was a “party girl” and her dad wasn’t even in the picture — Sophie opens up to the part-time music teacher about her messed up childhood.
“It was just my mom and I, bouncing around from one boyfriend’s house to the next,” she tells him. “We were more like sisters than mother and daughter — and I was the big sister, always picking up the pieces after every breakup, and I got really good at fixing her.”
Berger confirms that Sophie’s backstory is significant to the story of HIMYF. “It plays a huge role,” the EP says. “There’s a certain coming to terms with her identity and where she came from… before she is ultimately ready to find her person.”
Adds Hilary Duff: “She’s never had a serious relationship — she blows it up before it ever gets there — and I think that’s because she has to sort out some childhood stuff, and boy is that relatable.”
What did you think of How I Met Your Father Season 1, Episode 3: “The Fixer”? Were you surprised to see another potential father introduced so soon? And have you given any thought to who Sophie’s mom and dad might be — that is, assuming we’ve already met one or both of them on How I Met Your Mother? Drop your thoughts in a comment below.
I think HIMYF will have a much deeper connection to HIMYM than we realized. I was hoping for that, and it looks like it might actually happen. And who doesn’t want Sophie to end up with Josh Peck?! But he’s probably a red herring. It’s way too obvious.
Me!! I’m rooting for Jesse.
Didn’t they say it’s one of the three guys from the pilot? So it couldn’t be josh peck? Maybe I’m confused…
Future Sophie said she met the father in the first episode. I was thinking she met other guys that episode, they just didn’t show it.
She said it was a guy she met THAT NIGHT. She probably met a lot of people that night from the pilot episode, it just didn’t show them all.
I’m rooting for Ian, myself
I’m rooting for Jesse too!
I’ve loved Chris Lowell since he played Dell in Private Practice!
I was waiting for this. It felt so silly knowing that every date she goes on would be useless story-wise because they aren’t one of the main guys who she met that night. But now every date will be “oh, we actually met at this party/bar/airport/bridge this one random night last week/month/year” and then you have a new contender. That’s going to get really old really fast.
So that’s how they can drag this show on and on like the original. Keep introducing guys from the engagement party that Sophie ran into and had only a few words with. That’s annoying but makes sense to be able to make the show last a long time or tie up loose ends if it gets cancelled.
I feel like Josh Peck’s character could be the father but Jesse is the end game – like in the original how the mother was one person and the end game was another
I am getting the same vibes that most people have. I think the father is not her person and Jesse will be. I hope that’s not the case. That’s a retread of the original and it didn’t work out well for the show when they did that. I’d rather this version actually be a love story between Sophie and the father and if they are no longer together than maybe they could find their way back or maybe she could be single and fine with that. It’s not creative at all to have her divorce the father and end up with Jesse or any of the other guys. I’d prefer a more unique ending, but I’m pretty sure were just going to get the same rinse and repeat ending of HIMYM :(
i believe sophie’s parents are claudia and stuart from himym. her description of her childhood matches up with what we know about claudia and stuart
Nope. Claudia wasn’t a party girl and Stuart wasn’t an absentee father. They wed in 2006, and their daughter Esther was born in 2010. Sophie is 29 going on 30 in the year 2022. At the very least, they’d have to fudge the timeline to make that work.
Could Barney be Sophie’s father and just not know he has a daughter?
Absolutely should’ve seen it coming that they were going to just ret-con in every new guy as having met her that night. My own fault. Still annoyed.
It’s extremely obvious that Sophie and Jesse will gona be like Barney and Robin or Ted and Robin; and I don’t have problem with that, but I’m hoping that not matter what happens and how long it takes, that Drew is the father and she ends up with him in a mature, healthy and loving relationship. Their chemistry is simply amazing.
