Batgirl is currently in production and we finally have our first look at Leslie Grace in costume. However, we now have at least one new casting addition. According to Deadline, Ivory Aquino has joined the upcoming film as Alysia Yeoh, who will also be the first transgender character to appear in a DC movie.
Rumors surrounding Aquino’s involvement with Batgirl has actually been circulating for several days. Last week, Grace posted a photo to her Instagram stories that appeared to show her and Aquino shooting a scene for the film. The image also notably tagged Aquino’s account and was captioned with “Barbara and Alysia.” However, her casting wasn’t formally announced until today. Other recent set photos have shown Aquino acting alongside Jacob Scipio’s mystery character in the film.
Alysia was introduced as a major supporting player during Gail Simone and Ardian Syaf’s Batgirl run in 2011. She worked as a painter and bartender who dreamed of becoming a professional chef and eventually became Barbara Gordon’s roommate. She also briefly dated Barbara’s brother, James Gordon Jr. Alysia officially came out as transgender in the series’ 19th issue, which made her the first trans character in DC’s comic book universe as well.

Deadline’s breakdown notes that Aquino’s take on Alysia will also be a bartender. Aquino joins a supporting cast that so far includes J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon and Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman. Brendan Fraser is also starring as Batgirl’s villain, rumored to be Firefly.
Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are directing Batgirl from a screenplay by Christina Hodson. HBO Max hasn’t announced a release date. However, it’s expected to hit the streaming service by the end of this year.
