By David Salazar

The Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège has announced that Giampaolo Bisanti is set to be the company’s next music director.

His tenure will kick off at the start of the 2022-23 season and in his new post he will direct several opera productions and concerts every season. He will also preside over auditions for new orchestral and choral musicians.

Bisanti debuted with the company in 2017 in a production of “Rigoletto;” in 2019, he led performances of “Anna Bolena.”

Bisanti is currently the musical director of the Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari and has performed with such companies as the Opéra National de Paris, Opéra de Monte-Carlo, and Staatsoper Hamburg. He is set to make his debut at the Teatro alla Scala, Seattle Opera, Wiener Staatsoper, and Deutsche Oper Berlin.

He will be taking over for Speranza Scappucci who declined her extension and will remain a Guest Conductor with the company during the 2022-23 season.

The Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège’s 2022-23 season kicks off on August 27, 2022. Bisanti will conduct that opening night showcase.
