Packages of a popular plant-based mac and cheese are being recalled due to the presence of unlisted milk in the meal's contents.
The voluntary Class I recall impacts 15,626 cases of the Amy's Kitchen Vegan Organic Rice Mac & Cheeze, issued "to avoid the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction," per the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Items listed as "Best By 10/2023" with UPC 42272-00043 and Lot Code 60J0421 should be discarded or returned for a full refund. The recall was initiated by Amy's Kitchen after company officials received "a test result from a third-party laboratory indicating one of the meals in the lot contained trace amounts of milk protein."
Additional product that's not yet been sold and remains on shelves will also be discarded.
Per FDA guidelines, a Class I recall concerns "a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death."
When reached for comment, the Petaluma-based company referred KCBS Radio to the FDA's notice, which included this statement: "Amy's follows the highest possible food safety and quality control standards to ensure the safety and full enjoyment of its meals and is committed to implementing corrective actions flowing from the investigation of this event."
