  • Wayne Chrebet and Robby Sabo draft an all-time New York Jets team on “The Underdog Jets Podcast.”
  • The insults fly a little bit, as Chrebet goes in on Sabo’s gray hair, and Sabo returns the favor in proclaiming the wide receiver position’s lack of all-time talent (after the top few players, Don Maynard included, of course).
  • Chrebet provides his reaction to Wild Card Weekend and the New England Patriots epic meltdown at the hands of the Buffalo Bills.

Wayne Chrebet vs. Robby Sabo: The New York Jets all-time fantasy draft

With the first pick of the 2022 NFL draft, the New York Jets select … Joe Namath?

That at least appears to be the case in the latest episode of “The Underdog Jets Podcast,” as hosts Wayne Chrebet and Robby Sabo each drafted their all-time Gang Green squads in the first of a two-part segment.

Though far from an easy task, each is blessed with their own unique, lasting brand of New York knowledge. Jets X-Factor co-founder Sabo has been a credentialed Jets reporter for several years, while Chrebet is renowned for his 11-year playing career with the team that turned him into a mainstay in the New York record books.

Sabo, however, knows what he’s up against—he referred to Chrebet’s fantasy skills, particularly those of the daily variety as “impressive” before they get underway.

Working through specific player pools (that did not include NFL legends that spent brief portions of their illustrious careers in New York, like Brett Favre, Art Monk and Ed Reed), Sabo and Chrebet amassed a quarterback, running back, tight end, two wide receivers and a flex option (RB-FB-WR-TE), as well as a complete blocking unit on offense. (The defensive portion will be completed later down the road.)

From the get-go, Chrebet and Sabo faced a conundrum. Although their first selections were simple enough—Sabo went with the legendary Namath while Chrebet went with storied green rusher Curtis Martin as their respective opening picks—Sabo wondered aloud whether Chrebet himself should be allowed to linger amongst their selection pool.

The decision was eventually made to keep Chrebet’s name in the pool, with Sabo taking him with his final pick, serving as a complement in the slot to Wesley Walker, Mickey Shuler, and fullback-turned-flex Richie Anderson.

To perhaps little surprise, most of Chrebet’s team consisted of former teammates, at least the ones he was able to swipe away from Sabo’s grasp. Among his chosen comrades were Martin, Laveranues Coles, Jumbo Elliott, Kevin Mawae, and one of his head coaches, Herm Edwards.

In addition to their fantasy endeavors, Sabo and Chrebet also discussed the early stages of the NFL playoffs. Reiterating their long-standing support for current Jets head coach Robert Saleh, Chrebet and Sabo soothed Jets fans concerned with yet another postseason bracket lacing green by both reveling in the New England Patriots’ one-sided loss to the Buffalo Bills and assuring supporters that their team may have made the right decision by not hiring the coach of an early playoff departure.

The Dallas Cowboys’ disappointing loss in the Wild Card round was punctuated by controversial decisions from head coach Mike McCarthy, leading the NFC East champions’ 23-17 demise at the hands of San Francisco. McCarthy is in the second season at the helm of the Cowboys and was previously considered for the Jets’ head coaching job after they parted ways with Todd Bowles after the 2018 season.

“Maybe we dodged the bullet by not hiring him as coach a couple of years ago,” Chrebet remarked.

Both Sabo and Chrebet acknowledged that the Jets’ eventual post-Bowles decision to hire Adam Gase didn’t go their way, but they are satisfied with the path that Saleh has laid out.

“I’m not sure we’d like to direction we ended up going, but I think we have the right guy in coach Saleh for the job right now,” Chrebet added.
