A man of many talents, Ty Segall has continued his foray into film and TV soundtracks with the score to Whirlybird. The documentary profiles the husband-and-wife journalism team of Marika Gerrard and Zoey Tur who changed the TV news landscape with their pioneering helicopter coverage of the O.J. Simpson Bronco chase and 1992 Los Angeles Riots. The duo’s talents were then passed on to their daughter, Phish-loving MSNBC anchor Katy Tur.

The Matt Yoka-directed film premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival and is available now to stream on MUBI now, with most other streaming services offering Whirlybird as a rental. On Sunday, Segall shared the track “Story of the Century”. The percussion-driven composition is a departure from the underground psychedelic rock upon which Segall has built his sterling reputation, but the track gleams with the motion and suspense necessary for a film soundtrack. The song also features saxophone from longtime collaborator and Freedom Band bandmate Mikal Cronin.

This marks the latest soundtrack for Segall, who also provided the theme to the Comedy Central sitcom Corporate in addition to making a cameo on the program. He also contributed music for the 2012 21 Jump Street remake, HBO‘s AnimalsGrand Theft Auto, and more. The film’s score is out on February 22nd via Drag City.
