GENOA TOWNSHIP (WWJ) -- A weekend crash in Genoa Township claimed the lives of two high school students.
The Livingston County Sheriff’s Department said the deadly incident happened shortly before 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 22 in the area of S. Hacker Road and McClements Road, just north of Brighton.
A 16-year-old male from Fowlerville was driving a Ford F-150 with three other 16-year-old male passengers -- all from Howell -- when he reportedly failed to stop at the intersection and crashed into a passing Honda Civic.
The F-150 then went off the road and overturned, at which time the driver and one passenger were ejected from the vehicle, suffering fatal injuries. Both were pronounced dead at the scene by police.
Authorities transported the other two teens, and the driver of the Honda Civic, to area-hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.
Police closed the roadway for over four hours while crews cleaned up the wreckage.
Preliminary investigations suggested drugs and alcohol were not factors in the crash, and neither vehicle was reported to be speeding. However, police say that none of the teens in the pickup appeared to be wearing seatbelts.
The Livingston County Sheriff’s Department are continuing to investigate the situation.
