The Philadelphia 76ers are at the forefront of every trade rumor as the Feb. 10 trade deadline approaches quickly. The Sixers have the biggest domino to fall, Ben Simmons, but it doesn’t appear the franchise has any intention of moving him at the deadline.

The Sixers have not been particularly blown away by any of the offers they have received for Simmons.

While president Daryl Morey has admitted the spectacular play of Joel Embiid has widened the team’s search in a trade for Simmons, the fact remains it still prefers a top-25 player for him.

Per Shams Charania and Sam Amick of The Athletic, the Sixers would still rather wait and see if they can make a move for Brooklyn Nets star James Harden in the offseason:

With the NBA trade deadline just over two weeks away, rival teams interested in three-time All-Star Ben Simmons believe Philadelphia 76ers President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey has his sights set on a bigger target in the summertime: Brooklyn Nets star James Harden.

The 76ers continue to engage in trade talks around Simmons, who requested a trade and informed the franchise in October that he is not mentally ready to play again for the franchise and needs professional help for his mental health. But multiple sources, including people with direct knowledge of the team’s thinking and also from rival teams involved on the Simmons front, tell The Athletic that the 76ers are believed to prefer to wait in order to pursue Harden or another superstar in the offseason and thus want to save Simmons for that potential sign-and-trade rather than take what’s available on the current market.

This would make the most sense considering how hard the Sixers chased Harden in the 2020-21 season before he was dealt to the Nets. Morey obviously has a history with Harden from their time together with the Houston Rockets and Harden would be a nearly perfect fit next to Embiid due to his playmaking, his rebounding and his ability to score in bunches — especially in clutch situations.

While some may view the situation as the Sixers punting the 2021-22 season, Embiid does not view it that way. He wants the franchise to get everything it can for Simmons. The big fella mentioned earlier in the season there is no urgency to make a change right now as the team moves forward with the season.
