Zoe Lofgren Says 'I Think Newt Has Really Lost It,' as Jan. 6 Remarks Spark Outrage

Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren has described Newt Gingrich's latest comments about the January 6 Committee as bizarre.

While speaking to CNN's Jim Acosta on Sunday, Lofgren, who herself is a member of the Committee, discussed an interview Gingrich gave earlier in the day on Fox News.

During an interview with Fox host Maria Bartiromo, the former Speaker of the House, Gingrich, insisted those in the January 6 committee could "face the real risk of jail."

He said the "wolves would become sheep" if the Republicans take the House.

"That is just bizarre, I think Newt has really lost it," Lofgren responded after being played a clip of Gingrich.

She added: "It leaves me speechless. Unless he is assuming that the government does get overthrown and there is no system of justice, just random arrests, it is just a bizarre statement and he looks terrible."

Acosta also said Gingrich's statement sounds like that of an "autocratic government."

"You and your colleagues, are attempting to conduct an investigation, something that was supported by many Republicans up on Capitol Hill the days following January 6," Acosta added.

"They wanted to get to the bottom of it too, unfortunately, their tune has changed over the last several months."

During his Fox interview, Gingrich went into detail on why he believes those in January 6 Committee could face jail time.

"With this select committee on January 6, people who have run amok, they have broken the rules and are going after people in a way that is reminiscent of the British monarchy using closed-door systems that we outlawed deliberately," he said.

He continued: "They are running over people's civil liberties and what they need to understand is that on January 4 next year, you are going to go Republican majority in the House and a Republican majority in the Senate.

"All these people who have been so tough and so mean and so nasty are going to be delivered subpoenas for every document, conversation, tweet and email.

"This is because I think it is clear that these people are just running over the law, pursuing innocent people, causing them to spend thousands and thousands in legal fees for no justification, it is basically a lynch mob."

Gingrich closed by saying: "I think when you have a Republican Congress, this is all going to come crashing down.

"The wolves are going to find out that they are now sheep and they are the ones, I think, face the real risk of jail for the kinds of laws they are breaking."

In an opinion piece Gingrich wrote for Newsweek, he reiterated these claims and predicted disarray for the Democratic party.

"We are currently living through a moment of delusion among Democrats, who seem to think they can behave like wolves and destroy and intimidate their Republican opponents," he wrote.

"The wolves who currently dominate the Democratic Party think they will be permanent wolves.

"They are wrong. The 2022 midterm election will turn the Democratic wolves into sheep, and the power to shear the sheep will be handed over to House Republicans."

Newsweek has contacted Gingrich and Lofgren for comment.
