James LaBrie: Beautiful Shade Of Grey album review
He doesn’t exactly dominate the credits on Dream Theater albums, but singer James LaBrie has no problem finding enough material for his own career. On this, his fourth solo album (sixth if you include the two albums he recorded as Mullmuzzler), he delves into the complexities of human relationships, which can be hard to do without getting judgemental but he manages to avoid that… mostly. He also steers clear of the other 49 shades of grey.

Quartz recall purer, simpler times on riotous but poignant On The Edge Of Tomorrow
True Story. In 1975 this writer was embroiled in the chaos of Black Sabbath’s Sabotage tour. I sat with Ozzy Osbourne in a Range Rover as we travelled between gigs. After a while, he grew bored and made our driver stop. Without explanation, Ozzy got out of the 4x4, waved down the van following us, and climbed on board.

Cave In explore the noisy landscape between grunge and metalcore on Heavy Pendulum
After bassist Caleb Scofield died in a car crash in 2018, to support his family a stunned Cave In issued reworked demos begun with him as their sixth studio album Final Transmission, perhaps expecting it to be just that. Now, with the long-time friend Nate Newton on board, they revisit the same spirit they began with Scofield in 1998 – stomping around that noisy landscape connecting grunge to metalcore.

How Ozzy Osbourne’s No More Tears resurrected metal’s greatest icon
On September 3, 1989, Ozzy Osbourne awoke in a prison cell with an aching head and no memory of why he was there. While no stranger to waking up in strange places, the truth sickened him to his core: he was being charged with attempted murder, having tried to strangle his wife Sharon in a drink- and-drug-induced stupor. Though the couple reconciled, the writing was on the wall – the 80s were effectively dead and if Ozzy didn’t sort his shit out, he would be too.

Evergrey: more crunching prog as brutal riff power pounds into the gothic bleakness
Evergrey have been at this game for more than 25 years now, so they must be doing something right to have reached studio album number 13. Unlucky for some, but for these rather morose Swedes it’s pretty much business as usual, with mainman guitarist/vocalist Tom Englund leading from the front, his passionate and often soulful vocals perfectly complementing their trademark crunching prog metal.

Christina Booth: "I'm no rock star. I'm just a woman who can sing a bit"
"When you’re confronted with it, there’s not much you can do. You’ve just got to. get on with things, and adjust life accordingly.”. One of the many extraordinary things about Magenta’s Christina Booth is the straightforward way in which she talks about her recent brush with cancer. On this wet, midwinter day in South Wales, her lilting voice is pure light in the gloom. And underneath the jokes and laughter, Booth has the calm authority of someone who has faced testing times and come through.

xPropaganda - The Heart Is Strange: "a compelling listen"
Reuniting original Propaganda members Claudia Brücken and Susanne Freytag alongside producer Stephen Lipson, The Heart Is Strange is a compelling listen, sounding exactly like it could have followed their old group’s debut, A Secret Wish in 1985. From the synthesised detonation at the start of the album, the listener knows exactly what to expect. With its dispassionate voices, orchestral stabs and additional synthesised percussion entering at the halfway mark, six-minute opener The Night captures all the urgency and thrill of the original Propaganda.
