On January 23, the 31st Seoul Music Awards (SMA) was held at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul, and was organized by the SMA's Organizing Committee and hosted by Sports Seoul.
On this night, numerous amazing K-Pop artists took the stage to perform their best hits and take home an award, such as NCT 127 taking home highest award of the night, the Daesang (Grand Prize).
Other artists who bagged an award are IU, NCT DREAM, BTS, ENHYPEN, ATEEZ, aespa, SEVENTEEN, Brave Girls, Kang Daniel and more.
While many were happy and celebrated the win of their favorite K-Pop artists, many were also disappointed over on the other side of the spectrum.
According to fans who were highly-anticipating the awards ceremony in the hopes that their favorite artists take home an award, some of the K-Pop stars who showed tremendous results and performance in 2021 did not win an award - specifically a Bonsang, which is a main award.

Numerous fans expressed their disappointment that artists such as BLACKPINK's Rosé and Lisa, NCT DREAM, TXT (Tomorrow X Together), Stray Kids, IVE and more, did not even win a Bonsang at this year's awards ceremony.
They eventually took to their social media, such as Twitter, to trend the hashtag "#SMArigged," to call out the awards ceremony for their alleged rigging of votes to turn it into SMA's favor.

In addition, many also accused the awards ceremony of giving the awards only to those who are in attendance or those who they are in good graces with.
To support their claims that the SMA was rigged, fans took to Twitter to share with others the achievements their favorite idols and groups had in 2021 alone, such as their album and singles sales, chart placing, music show wins, votes, and more.

People also expressed their disappointment and shock with the results over on the online community forum, TheQoo, and even calling the awards ceremony "SM Music Awards," a play on SMA's name, after fans deemed that the awards ceremony "gave SM Entertainment artists the awards."
Some comments include, "The Bonsangs are ridiculous kkkk. F**k, if they are gonna do it like this, why have paid votes?," "Shouldn't they be giving the awards to artists who has the highest physical and digital sales???," "Did they choose these at random?," and "The ultimate baseless award show," among other similar comments.
