DAVENPORT, Fla. –  Polk County deputies shot a man in unincorporated Davenport this afternoon, according to a release from the department.

Around 3 p.m., deputies responded to a 911 call from an elderly woman that reported her adult son was trying to smother her. The report states that the woman said she woke up to the suspect pressing a pillow on her face while she was taking a nap on the couch. She was able to escape and call 911 from a safe location.

When deputies arrived, the suspect then barricaded himself in an upstairs bathroom. He refused to exit the home when the three responding deputies ordered him out. When the deputies entered the bathroom, the man charged at them with a large knife, stabbing one deputy on the top of his head. According to the report, the deputy deployed his Taser, but it was unsuccessful and the man kept fighting while armed with the knife. That is when the deputies shot the man. The suspect did not survive.

The deputy that was stabbed was taken to a local hospital to receive stitches and is expected to make a full recovery.

The report also states that the suspect has a criminal history in Virginia, was a registered felon and on probation.
