January in Ohio: Snow blankets Wayne, Holmes, Ashland counties; cold temps continue

A fresh snowfall blanketed much of the tri-county area Sunday and more was expected as the work week gets underway.

A winter weather advisory was posted through the day Sunday for most of northern Ohio including Wayne, Holmes and Ashland counties. Snow totals were expected to reach up to 6 inches.

The heavy snow made the trek to Sunday services tricky for some and slowed traffic on area roadways. Visibility on slippery roadways also was an issue in some places.

Ohio Department of Transportation plows were spotted on state highways and many area residents manned snow blowers and hand shovels as they worked to clear sidewalks and driveways.

Snowfall rates measured at around an inch per hour at times, according to the National Weather Service.

More snow coming as work week begins

More snow is in the forecast Monday with additional accumulations of 1 to 3 inches expected in Wayne and Holmes counties. Ashland County could see freezing drizzle Monday night and into Tuesday. Frigid temperatures are also expected through the rest of the week.

Here's a look at the forecast for the days ahead:

Tuesday 

Some snow and freezing drizzle possible. Otherwise partly sunny with highs in the low 20s and a low of zero Tuesday night.

A new coating of snow covers the trees and the ground as a pickup heads west on Smith Road Sunday.

Wednesday

Partly cloudy. Highs 15 to 20, and a low again of zero.

Thursday

Partly sunny and cold with highs in the mid 20s and wind chill values as low as 10 below in the morning. There's a chance of snow showers after midnight with lows 15-20.

Friday

A chance of snow showers in the afternoon with highs in the upper 20s and lows around 10 degrees.

Saturday

Partly sunny with highs around 22.
