Florida Power and Light helped put some power behind on elementary schools STEM programs.

FPL donated $50,000 to the Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary through their Classroom Makeover Grant, which is used to help schools pay for computers, robot lab packs, and other STEM related resources.

The grant was launched in 2022 as part of a four-year, $2 million commitment from Florida Power and Light to help expand STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) programs around the state.

“As a Title I school with a 98% Black population, we are committed to providing children of color with vast learning opportunities and exposure to STEM education and careers,” principal Katrina W. Granger said. “We are so appreciative of FPL’s commitment to diversity in STEM, which has made the vision of a hardworking and inspiring STEM educator with big dreams, Tracey Howard [a teacher at the school], come to fruition. This grant will support both Mrs. Howard and her scholars achieve their greatest dreams.”

“Our STEM Classroom Makeover Grant allows us to invest in our next generation to help provide transformational learning opportunities for Black students in a STEM classroom setting,” said Pamela Rauch, vice president of external affairs and economic development for FPL. “We are excited that these projects will be one of the first, as we complete our inaugural year of implementing this grant, which allows us to support both educators and students, our next generation of leaders.”
